How does alcohol consumption affect deep sleep?

Asked a year ago

I've been reading about the sleep cycle, as I started having trouble getting enough rest at night. Some articles I've read mention alcohol as one of the possible factors, but I don't quite understand its effects.

I know it can affect the REM stage, but what about deep sleep? Does it make you sleep deeper or longer? If it does, shouldn't that be a good thing?

The length of sleep is as necessary as sleep quality. While alcohol may help you fall asleep quickly because of its sedative properties, it will affect the quality of your sleep. With alcohol, you may likely wake up severally during the night, preventing you from getting into a deep sleep or staying long in it. This can leave you tired in the morning and unable to build up your immunity, as should typically occur during deep sleep.
