CBD Oil for Acne

CBD Oil for Acne

Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged, which causes pimples or blackheads to form. Acne can form in many areas of the body and is most common on the face, upper back, and shoulders. Some kinds of acne may go away on their own, but many times acne can be persistent and require treatment in order to go away. We will discuss how CBD and medicinal mushrooms can be used as a treatment for acne.

CBD oil is gaining recognition as a potential natural remedy for managing acne, a common skin condition that affects individuals of all ages. Acne is characterized by the presence of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads, often caused by factors such as excessive sebum production, inflammation, and clogged pores. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the cannabis plant, and it is believed to offer several advantages in addressing acne-related issues.

What Causes Acne?

When hair follicles in the skin become blocked, acne forms. There are many different factors that can cause a hair follicle to become clogged and there are different kinds of acne that can form as a result.

Types of acne

There are many types of acne that can affect a person’s appearance and even lead to scarring. Understanding the different types of acne is important to be able to properly treat it.

Blackheads

Blackheads received their name due to their appearance, as they appear as small black bumps on the skin. Like other types of acne, blackheads form when a hair follicle becomes clogged. What makes blackheads different is that the skin over the clogged hair follicle remains open and the exposure to air causes the black appearance.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads appear similar to blackheads but as indicated in their name, they are white bumps. Unlike blackheads, the skin over the clogged hair follicle remains closed and the bump retains a yellow/white appearance. Both blackheads and whiteheads are very common, especially in the facial area. An estimated 10-20% of adults have whiteheads.

Papules and Pustules

Papules are an inflammatory acne and appear as raised bumps on the skin. They do not contain pus. A papule becomes a pustule when it forms pus, which many papules do over a matter of days.

Cysts

Cystic acne is the most serious form of acne and has an appearance similar to that of a boil. They are generally the largest form of acne that penetrates the deepest into the skin. Cystic acne can take a long time to heal and can leave scarring even once healed.

Causes of acne

There are many factors that can cause or worsen acne. Acne is often the result of a combination of these factors.

Hormones

Hormonal acne occurs when the body produces an excess of sebum, an oily substance in the skin glands. Hormonal acne is most common among women and can fluctuate based on a woman’s period cycle or consumption of birth control. During puberty, hormonal acne is most commonly found in the T-zone, which includes the forehead, nose, and chin. Adult hormonal acne is most commonly found on the cheeks and jawline.

Diet

A person’s diet can have a massive impact on their skin’s appearance. High glycemic foods such as sugar, pasta, white rice and white bread cause the body’s sugar levels to spike and the body to release a hormone called (IGF-1). An excess amount of this hormone leads to an overproduction of sebum, increasing the likelihood of acne. Another product that increases the production of (IGF-1) is cow’s milk, meaning many dairy products can cause or worsen acne.

Sleep deprivation

When a person does not get enough sleep, their body’s cortisone, the stress hormone, levels rise (1). Cortisone triggers inflammation throughout the body and on the skin which can cause or worsen acne. Sleep drops can be used to improve the quantity and quality of a person’s sleep.

Stress

Stress is generally not the sole cause of acne, but combined with other factors it can make acne and breakouts significantly worse. Like sleep deprivation, stress can increase the body’s cortisone levels and make the body prone to inflammation. Relax drops can reduce stress and help you avoid stress-induced acne or breakouts.

How do CBD Skin Care Products Work?

One of the primary contributors to acne is inflammation, and CBD is thought to possess anti-inflammatory properties. By interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system, CBD can potentially reduce redness and swelling associated with acne lesions. It may also modulate the immune response and inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory compounds, thereby helping to alleviate acne-related inflammation.

In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects, CBD may assist in regulating sebum production. Excessive sebum production can clog pores and lead to the development of acne. Some research suggests that CBD can inhibit the proliferation of sebocytes, the cells responsible for sebum production. By balancing sebum production, CBD may help prevent pore blockages, reducing the occurrence of new acne lesions.

CBD contains cannabinoids which are similar to the endocannabinoids in the body’s endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for processes such as sleep, stress, and immune system, and the immune system is responsible for controlling inflammation in the body. Due to CBD’s molecular structure, it can reduce inflammation (4) and thus ease the swelling caused by acne breakouts. CBD can also reduce the amount of oil the skin produces without drying skin out. Reducing the amount of oil your skin produces, diminishes the appearance and severity of acne.

CBD-infused skincare products, including CBD oil, have become increasingly popular for those looking for a natural approach to managing acne. These oils are often blended with carrier oils, such as coconut oil or hemp seed oil, making them suitable for topical application. When applied directly to the skin, CBD oil offers a gentle and non-invasive method for addressing acne without the potential side effects commonly associated with pharmaceutical treatments.

How do Medicinal Mushroom Skincare Products Work?

Medicinal mushrooms are rich in antioxidants which reduce inflammation. Mushrooms such as Shiitake, Reishi, Enokitake, and Turkey Tail mushrooms contain Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and Pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5), and Kojic acid. Niacinamide is a super-nutrient for the skin, which helps reduce inflammation and regulate oil production whilst keeping the skin hydrated. Pantothenic acid aids in moisture retention and acts as an anti-inflammatory.

What Other Skin Conditions Can CBD and Medicinal Mushrooms Treat?

CBD and medicinal mushrooms can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis, and eczema. The antioxidants in CBD also help fight signs of aging, making CBD products a great skincare choice for people of all ages.
