Sleep deprivation is a dangerous condition that can cause many different health problems, but can it cause nausea? If so, what can you do to fix it?
Side Effects of Sleep Deprivation
Research has recognised the following potential side effects of sleep deprivation:
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease and hypertension
- Mood-related disorders like anxiety and depression
- Alcoholism and other substance abuse problems
While that list doesn't explicitly state that being tired can make you nauseous or that you can even throw up from sleep deprivation, the aforementioned conditions are often precursors to headaches, sore muscles, and psychosis, all of which can definitely cause nausea and vomiting.
How to Get Rid of Nausea From Lack of Sleep
The obvious answer to getting rid of nausea triggered by sleep deprivation is to get more sleep. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done and doesn't necessarily deal with the immediate problem. That being said, here are some natural cures for nausea from lack of sleep:
- Sip nausea-relieving teas Research has shown that ginger is an effective, inexpensive, and safe method of relieving symptoms of nausea and vomiting, and the same is true for peppermint and chamomile.
- Drink citrus and cold water Research has shown that both the scent of lemon and ice water are effective at combatting symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Additionally, nausea might restrict your desire to eat or drink, leading to dehydration and worsening the symptoms. Therefore, drinking ice water with a squeeze of lemon is imperative in dealing with symptoms of nausea.
- Don't drink carbonated drinks Unfortunately, the belief that drinking diluted coca-cola and ginger ale can relieve symptoms of nausea is no more than a myth. Ginger does indeed relieve nausea, but the concentration of ginger in carbonated drinks is far too low for this benefit. Furthermore, carbonated beverages are packed with sugar and can cause acid reflux, all of which can worsen nausea.
