Is the Hemlock Varnish Shelf mushroom the same as Reishi mushroom?

Asked 3 years ago

They are both called "Ganoderma", but Reishi mushroom is called Ganoderma lucidum and Hemlock Varnish Shelf mushroom is called Ganoderma tsugae. I've even heard people calling something "hemlock reishi mushrooms". Are they the same thing? How do these varieties of mushrooms differ from each other in terms of benefits and side effects?

The reason that you've heard people referring to Hemlock Reishi is that these 2 mushrooms are different variants of the same thing. The Hemlock Varnish Shelf mushroom (Ganoderma tsugae) is essentially the local eastern United States variant of the Reishi mushroom (Lingzhi or Ganoderma lucidum) formula. As such, the dosage, benefits, and risks of each Ganoderma mushroom are very similar.

While Hemlock Varnish Shelf mushroom and Reishi mushroom aren't totally the same, they have a lot of similarities. Hemlock Varnish Shelf mushroom is common in places like Maine and New Hampshire, and it is just a different type of a variant of Reishi mushroom. They look almost identical, and their benefits aren't very different either.
