Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant. It is typically used to relieve symptoms of mental and physical disorders such as stress, anxiety, and insomnia, but how does this happen? Does CBD oil make you sleepy, and why?

Side Effects of CBD Oil

Few studies have been done on the side effects of CBD oil over a long period, but the existing research does note that it appears to be much lower than conventional drug treatments for psychiatric and physical disorders. Noted side effects include:

  • Somnolence (drowsiness)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Changes in appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Irritability

How CBD Affects Energy Levels and Concentration

Aside from the aforementioned conditions, CBD is also recognised as a potential treatment for ADHD. The reason for this is that CBD has been shown, with neuroimaging studies, to:

Induce significant alterations in brain activity and connectivity patterns during resting state and performance of cognitive tasks in both healthy volunteers and patients with a psychiatric disorder.

It also needs to be understood that sleepiness as a result of CBD is an uncommon and usually dose-dependent side effect. It's true that CBD does appear to improve sleep quality, but not by inhibiting or stimulating certain brain functions to induce sleep in the way that a pharmaceutical sleeping tablet does. Instead, studies have shown that CBD modulates the sleep-wake cycle, either relieving symptoms of stress and anxiety, insomnia, or somnolence, depending on the individual.

How Long Does CBD Fatigue Last?

Sometimes, CBD fatigue results from the body not being used to the new substance and may take some time to get used to. It could also result from an incorrect dosage that could be alleviated by reducing the dose. While there is no definitive answer, it shouldn't take you more than a few weeks to get used to CBD and for mild side effects to cease. If side effects persist longer than that, you may be sensitive to the substance and should consider refraining from using CBD.

However, studies have shown that CBD is well tolerated, even in children, and that side effects ceased entirely around 24 hours after treatment was stopped.

Can CBD Fatigue Be Prevented?

For the most part, CBD fatigue cannot be prevented in those susceptible to it. However, for others, the beneficial effects of CBD can be enhanced while the negative effects are reduced by taking it in conjunction with other components like certain medicinal mushrooms. This is the basis for our carefully developed M2CBD formula that we use to produce all of our different therapeutic products.
