Although many conditions affect the thyroid negatively, all of them can usually be grouped under 1 of 2 terms:

  1. Hyperthyroidism When your thyroid gland produces more thyroid hormone than it should.
  2. Hypothyroidism When your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone.

The term "thyroid hormone" is used to encompass several individual hormones, including thyroxine that is essential for healthy metabolism and digestion, how efficiently your heart and muscles work, your brain development, and the health of your bones. In the case of hypothyroidism, the missing hormone is replaced with a synthetic version called levothyroxine.

Is CBD Good for the Thyroid?

Although more research is needed, some scientists believe that CBD oil could benefit thyroid diseases due to its effect on the endocannabinoid and endocrine systems. Some studies have suggested that CBD oil interacts with cannabinoid receptors (CB1 & CB2) and can help regulate the release of hormones in the endocrine system.

Additionally, there is research to suggest that CBD can also act as an anti-inflammatory agent, which could also be beneficial for alleviating the symptoms of thyroid conditions.

As such, you may be wondering: "Can I take CBD oil with existing thyroid medication?"

Does CBD Interact With Levothyroxine?

Unfortunately, there is no existing scientific evidence on the direct interactions between CBD oil and thyroid medications like levothyroxine. However, assumptions can be drawn given the nature of how these two substances are metabolised in the body. Both are metabolised in the liver through enzyme cytochrome p450 pathways. As such, there could be negative interactions between levothyroxine and CBD oil because CBD could slow the rate at which levothyroxine is metabolised. This could result in increased levels of serum levothyroxine, which could cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Headache
  • Anxiety
  • Tremor and muscle weakness
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Menstrual abnormalities
  • Irritability
  • Emotional labiality
  • Sleep disturbances

Should You Take CBD Oil With Thyroid Medication?

There simply isn't enough research on this topic to draw a definitive answer and state that "CBD does affect thyroid medication." Although there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that the potential for adverse reactions is low, you shouldn't put your safety at risk. Instead, you should always consult a doctor before supplementing CBD into your routine if you are on prescription medication.
