Does Lion's Mane lower Testosterone levels as a side effect?

Asked 3 years ago

What is the effect of Lion's Mane on testosterone and how would this differ between men and women? If they do lower testosterone then how would Lion's Mane mushrooms affect libido?

Currently, research into the side effects of Lion's Mane mushrooms over a long period of time is incredibly limited and focused primarily on animals. There is some anecdotal evidence that some medicinal mushrooms have lowered libido, and even some documented evidence that other medicinal mushrooms (Reishi mushrooms and Yellow Jelly mushrooms) lowered testosterone production, which could be linked to a lower libido.

However, this evidence doesn't necessarily carry over into Lion's Mane as well. Just because mushrooms are similar in nutritional content and chemical composition, doesn't mean they all have the same list of benefits and side effects. What this means is that the relationship between Lion's Mane mushrooms and testosterone production isn't understood enough to draw conclusive results.

If you're worried about this being a potential side effect, consider incorporating Cordyceps into your diet as well as these have been noted to stimulate testosterone production in certain cases.

Lion's mane can improve your health in different ways. Lion's Mane mushroom or just mushrooms, in general, are known to improve the level of testosterone in the body, giving you better muscle growth and overall energy throughout the day. Therefore, no Lion's mane has no evidence that it lowers testosterone as a side effect.

There is very little known about Lion's mane and its side effect. However, studies show it contains dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blocker which lowers testosterone levels in both males and females. Lowered testosterone can decrease sex drive and libido in both genders.
