Can you safely take CBD oil with Prednisone?
Asked 3 years ago
I've heard that CBD can interact with many drugs. Are there interactions with Prednisone and CBD oil?

It is always best to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any supplements or medications together, including CBD oil and Prednisone. While CBD oil has been found to be generally safe and well-tolerated, it can interact with some drugs, including those that are metabolized by the liver.
One study has suggested that CBD may inhibit the metabolism of certain medications, including Prednisone, potentially leading to higher levels of the drug in the bloodstream. This could increase the risk of side effects associated with Prednisone. CBD could also interact with other prescription medications, something that we already wrote about. Therefore, it is important to discuss the use of CBD oil with your doctor if you are currently taking any medication.

Both CBD oil and Prednisone are inhibitors of the cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP3A, which means that taking both of them together would result in them having to compete for metabolism. What this means is that the interactions with CBD oil and Prednisone could be dangerous, potentially leading to increased side effects from both.
If you are on Prednisone or any other medication, you should talk to your doctor before deciding to try CBD oil as well. Additionally, give it a few hours in between doses to minimize adverse reactions as much as possible.

Studies show that CBD can interact with Prednisone by inhibiting the same enzyme (Cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP3A) as prednisone, and using both of them together may decrease glucocorticoid clearance and increase side effects of Prednisone. Before taking CBD with prednisone or any other medication, you should seek professional advice from a doctor.

No, it is not safe to use CBD oil while taking Prednisone simultaneously. CBD can inhibit CYP3A in the body, but Prednisone is also known to inhibit CYP3A in the body. Therefore, using them together might give good results in glucose clearance, but facing systemic side effects is inevitable. It is always best to consult a doctor before using CBD oil with Prednisone.
