Does CBD oil act as an anticoagulant and thin your blood?

Asked 3 years ago

Is it true that CBD oil can act as a blood thinner? I have a brainstem cavernoma and have been using CBD/THC, but I am currently concerned that it's actually dangerous for me.

Studies have shown that most, if not all, cannabinoids in cannabis have an anticoagulant effect, especially in patients with type-2 diabetes. Although CBD has the mildest anticoagulation effect, it is still present, and THC has an abnormally high anticoagulation effect.

The current recommendations state that if you have a condition such as yours, you shouldn't start aspirin or anticoagulants unless your doctor has assessed you and recommended it. Even then, anticoagulants shouldn't be used for extended periods of time.

Something as potentially dangerous as this should definitely be brought up with your doctor. Even if you live in an area where cannabis is illegal, it's against the Hippocratic Oath to refuse a consultation with you on this topic, especially when it could be potentially life-threatening. At the very least, stop the THC intake, but definitely consult your doctor for more information.

Although more studies need to be carried out, recent evidence suggests that CBD can help with blood clots and also thin your blood. This will enhance blood flow to the brain tissues and other parts of the body.
