The Effect of Taking CBD Oil With Birth Control

There is not much research on the effect of CBD oil while on birth control pills, but there is some concern that hormonal contraceptives might not be as effective if taken in conjunction with CBD oil.

In a 2020 study, the researchers noted that CBD seemed to suppress estrogen production (1). Since CBD inhibits enzymes, it may decrease the effectiveness of contraceptives that are estrogen-based. Under such circumstances, non-estrogen forms of birth control may work better. For CBD users, progesterone-only alternatives may be a reliable option.

However, more research is needed before definitive conclusions can be drawn.

Be Sure to Consult Your Doctor

CBD can interact with medications, including birth control pills, so it is best to consult your doctor. Everyone is different and will likely react differently to CBD, so, although the risk is reportedly low, it can never hurt to be extra careful and seek advice from your healthcare provider.
