Even those explicitly attempting to stop other psychological effects such as anxiety or OCD have noted how easily they managed to fall asleep after using CBD products for as short as one week. If you're attempting to fix insomnia directly, you shouldn't have a too difficult time doing so.
What Makes a Good CBD Product for Sleep?
Identifying a high-quality CBD oil means looking at the label and comparing it to 3rd party-lab results and a certificate of analysis (COA). Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to tell the quality of a tincture or oil just by looking at it. Different raw plants, extraction methods, and CBD concentrations will cause differences in the darkness, viscosity, and even colour.
All reputable CBD products will come with COA, and if the merchant you are purchasing it from cannot provide one, then don't purchase it from them. Things to look out for on a COA are:
- Accurate labels One of the biggest problems CBD users face is inaccurate claims made by CBD oil merchants. Legally, CBD products in the UK have to be below 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), but some studies have shown this amount to sometimes exceed 40% THC with less than 1% CBD.
- Present cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids CBD products usually come with a CBD dosage of 500mg-10,000mg per bottle, meaning that a 30ml bottle could vary dramatically in concentration. If you're purchasing a broad-spectrum or full-spectrum product, you'll want the presence of other compounds like cannabigerol (though there is no guide for how much) due to something called the entourage effect. If you're purchasing a CBD isolate, on the other hand, the COA should show nothing but CBD.
- Extraction process There are various ways to extract CBD from the cannabis plant. However, the most beneficial one is the carbon dioxide method, as this creates a stable compound with a high cannabinoid concentration. It can also be extracted with alcohol, heat, and other methods.
- Impurities or dangerous components 3rd-party lab testing will also reveal the presence of dangerous components, such as pesticides, heavy metals, preservatives, artificial flavouring, and more. If you want a high-quality product, try to limit these as much as possible.
What Is the Best CBD Product for Sleep?
There are many different types of CBD products available, so there are a few things you'll have to consider when deciding what will work best for you.
Sublingual, Ingestion, or Inhalation?
Although there are many different forms of CBD products, the most popular ones are those taken orally, either in capsules or oils. Although you can experiment with inhaling smoke or vapor, why put your lungs through something that might not be necessary?
Capsules will take longer to work as they need to be metabolized by your digestive system before they reach your brain, whereas sublingual application of oils will work much faster. To do this correctly, place the drops under your tongue and hold them there for 1-2 minutes before you swallow, and the CBD will dissolve into your bloodstream through the surrounding tissue.
Full-Spectrum, Broad-Spectrum, or Isolates?
Though we elaborate more on the differences between these components here, a quick explanation of each can help you decide:
- Isolates The purest and most processed form of CBD with no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or flavonoids. Not as effective as others, but can be beneficial for people who are unsure of CBD or sensitive to THC and other components.
- Full-spectrum The least processed form of CBD with many other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. More effective than isolates but can cause a failed drug test for the presence of THC and might not be handled well by everyone.
- Broad-spectrum There is a great balance between effectiveness and risk, containing many other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, but (usually) no THC. The most popular choice of CBD.

Best CBD Dosage for Sleep
Practically everywhere, you'll hear the phrase, "Start small and increase your dosage." There is good reason for that, as everyone reacts differently. Though the side effects are rare and low, that's not to say that you won't react poorly. While most studies have used concentrations of 20mg-1,000mg per day, the FSA guidelines recommend 70mg per day, so you've got room to work with. There really isn't a science-backed recommendation for how much CBD oil to take for sleep.
