Is there a difference between Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) and CBD oil?

Asked 3 years ago

I was shopping around online for CBD oil and came across a product stating 'full extract cannabis oil' (RSO). What's the difference between CBD oil and RSO in the UK according to the CBD community?

It is easy to confuse CBD and RSO since they are both derived from cannabis, but they are two different things. People suffering from various health issues have been trying Rick Simpson Oil for some time now, with some claiming that it has been of much help. However, since RSO is illegal, little research on humans is available. So what is RSO, and how is it different from CBD?

Just looking at the names of the two products, it can be tempting to think that they are the same thing. However, when you look at the cannabinoids that they comprise, you will discover that these two oils are different.

RSO became famous after a documentary by Rick Simpson with claims that it may help with cancer. Besides cancer, some people claim that RSO can help manage epileptic conditions and other life-threatening diseases.

What makes RSO different from CBD is the cannabinoids in it. Ideally, RSO is a full-spectrum extract that contains only a wide spectrum of cannabinoids. RSO is obtained from cannabis Indica strains and thus contains more THC content than CBD.

Ideally, anywhere from 50-60% THC and 10.15% CBD levels depending on the strain used. According to Rick, THC in RSO gives its power to fight against cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Interestingly, this THC makes it different from CBD. Since RSO is psychoactive, it is illegal globally, meaning there’s little research on it.

Unlike RSO, CBD is produced from hemp, an alternative form of cannabis. Unlike Indica strains with high THC content, hemp contains high levels of CBD and negligible THC amounts. Unlike RSO, CBD has no psychoactive effects on its users, meaning it won’t give the “high” effect. As a result, THC is readily available and widely accepted in the UK, US, and many other parts of the world. Additionally, there’s much research ongoing about CBD and its benefits and its widely used by consumers worldwide to manage various health issues.

RSO oil usually has over 20% THC. CBD usually has 0.3% THC. Generally, RSO full spectrum oil is derived from marijuana plants. Full-spectrum CBD, isolate, and broad-spectrum, are derived from hemp. The high concentration of THC in ROS makes it psychoactive. CBD is not psychoactive. The dosing and what they're used for differ significantly. You should consult with a doctor before use.
