Why does CBD oil make me feel dehydrated?
Asked 4 years ago
I took the plunge this week, so I went looking for some relief from CBD Oil. It was - to put it mildly - a harrowing and very negative experience. My first issue is that I take opioids for pain. So on day one, I stopped my pain meds and took a ½ dose of CBD Oil at 5:1. It did nothing for me. On day two, I ate a couple of gummy bears during the day (500mg each), and that night I decided to take a full dose (5mg) of CBD 1:1. After 3 hours of waiting with no reaction and my pain increasing and flaring, I decided to step back and take my oxycontin. Shortly thereafter, I applied CBD balm to my lower back, which was inflamed. Within 2 minutes of applying the balm, my lower back pain decreased considerably, and I was able to fall asleep. I woke up a couple of hours later with a dry mouth, and my body felt like it had been pummeled with rubber bullets, and I needed to urinate. I got up, took a hot shower, and then sat in the jacuzzi for 30 minutes. Again I slept for a couple of hours and woke up with a dry mouth and the need to urinate. I was feeling dehydrated. I drank 3 glasses of water and used a spray to combat the dry mouth. This was repeated twice more before morning. I'm at a loss and trying to understand it. I was definitely hoping for more positive results. Any similar experiences, thoughts, or suggestions?

Most CBD users who experience a dry mouth after taking CBD think that CBD dehydrates them. However, it is important to know that dry mouth and dehydration aren’t the same things.
CBD is available in different forms - from topical creams to oral tinctures to CBD oils. Interesting, you will experience a different effect depending on the method of CBD consumption. For instance, vaping CBD provides faster relief and gives users a more potent experience. Additionally, many CBD vapers say they feel dehydrated afterwards.
So, can CBD make you dehydrated?
Although many CBD users claim to experience cottonmouth after taking CBD, there’s no evidence that CBD dehydrates the body. As earlier stated, having a dry mouth does not necessarily mean that you are dehydrated. To help you understand this, let’s take a brief look at CBD and the endocannabinoid system.
How does CBD interact with the body?
The body’s endocannabinoid system sends cannabinoids to cannabinoid receptors in the body. As you may know, each of these receptors controls a specific body function like general mood, saliva production, and pain tolerance. CB2 receptors determine how much saliva is produced.
When cannabinoids bind with the receptors, they promote homeostasis by regulating how the process is done. However, when CBD binds with CB2 receptors along the salivary glands, less saliva is produced. This explains why CBD users might experience a dry mouth but doesn’t necessarily mean that one is dehydrated.
So, what makes you feel dehydrated after taking CBD oil?
Now you know that CBD does not dehydrate you but still feels dehydrated after vaping CBD oil. What might be the cause? One explanation may be that another ingredient in the e-liquid other than the CBD itself is causing dehydration. CBD oil contains CBD extract, vegetable glycerine, and propylene glycol. Although the two last ingredients are necessary when vaping CBD oil, there are chances that they can dehydrate you.
Besides, some CBD vape products contain additional ingredients like flavouring extracts and nicotine that can dehydrate the body. In any case, dehydration due to CBD intake would rarely cause any serious trouble.
Here’s how to stay hydrated when taking CBD oil
Knowing that CBD will not dehydrate you is just one side of the coin. You need to know that you can stay hydrated as a regular CBD vaper. One way to achieve this is to drink a lot of water even if you feel thirsty.
To ensure that you don’t run out of water when out of your home, bring enough water bottles with you when out there. This way, you will ensure that you have enough water to drink to prevent feeling dehydrated.
Another great tip to avoid dehydration is to avoid vaping a lot at once. The idea is to space out your vaping throughout the day.
Last but not least, you need to buy only high-quality vape oils. Ideally, buy your CBD vape oils from reputable brands that don’t use low-quality filler ingredients that have a dehydrating effect on your body. However, even with high-quality CBD vape oils, it’s essential to drink plenty of water.
