I've heard that they can help in dealing with tumors and cancers, but how true is this? What about other mushrooms?

Studies have indicated that maitake may be used to prevent and treat cancers. Studies show that maitake D-fraction extract can help to fight and suppress tumour growth. 
In a Study, maitake D-fraction extract was found to kill cancerous cells in man when taken alongside a protein that also fights cancer.
